Novation Launchpad MKII
Novation Launchpad MKII is a successor of previously sold first version and there is also Launchpad Pro, which stands for a version with some additional features. Today we are going to take a look at what it is, what it misses compared to Pro version and whether it´s suitable for you or not.
What is Launchpad?
Launchpad MKII is grid controller with 64 control pads lit by RGB LED lights which indicates what is the pad currently doing. Launchpad was designed to be used together with Ableton Live software and the biggest advantage is that it does not need any further setup, you just plug it in and play. It allows you to play clips, add drum racks to your sound and mix the sounds together.
Great, but not the greatest
The biggest advantage lies in the way to power it. All you need is an USB cable, there is no special plug to use. Unfortunately, there is no possibility to use Launchpad MKII without connecting it to computer. However, this is possible with the Pro version. You can also simply connect it to other Novation devices like Launch Control or Launch key and play it in one track via Ableton Live. In compare with Launchpad Pro it misses velocity sensitive pads, which allows to tune sounds according to how hard you hit the pad, note mode with no possibility to miss the right note and ability to connect it to other software like Studio One, Logic or Cubase.
Totally modern device
Novation also features an app for iPhone, iPad and other Apple devices, so you may control it this way. Launchpad Controller MKII comes with 1GB of preset samples that are ready to be used or tuned further to get even better experience. Preset samples are of various genres from acoustic to hard drums. Together with the device you will also get a license for Ableton Live Lite, Novation Bass Station and Novation V Station VST.
