Pocket Operator – Robot

Wouldn´t it be great if you could add some old style effects in your music mix? That is exactly what Teenage Engineering PO-28 Robot synthesizer allows you to do. It takes the best of old 8-bit

synthesizers, packs it into fantastic plain retro design and gives you plenty of adjustable sound effects to mix. It is another member of Pocket Operators family, which became a living legend shortly after hitting the market.

First look shows something very similar to calculator. Simple monochromatic display with old style buttons and knobs connected directly to the board without any cover. First what you notice is that you have 23 buttons in total with two rotary knobs which allows to adjust output effects according to your own needs.

All in all, you have 15 synthesizer sounds with two adjustable parameters and one special effect for a drum kit which enhances the sound to more complex result. A word “robot” in name of the device promises 15 fantastic robotic tones, similar to sounds of some of the most known movie robots. If you want to know how to achieve a specific result, we cannot give you a clear answer, because operating this device is somehow a matter of fortune. The user manual briefly says something about basic operations with buttons, but there is no description of effects on their own, so all you need to do is to try it. With a Glide function you can add vibrato effect and more expression to your sound using the two rotary knobs under the screen.

The back side of PO-28 is plain. It only contains a metal stand and battery compartment for two AAA battery cells. These are powerful enough to keep operator in standby mode for up to two years, so once you insert batteries you won´t have to think about them for a long time. And that´s definitely good, because pulling the cells out is quite difficult.

What will probably make you happy is 3,5 mm input and output jack which allows you to connect other pocket operators in a chain or some kind of external speakers. However, speakers are not necessary, because all PO´s are loud enough on their own.
